Toledo Bend Reservoir Fishing Report
for
July 13, 2010
The Dog Days of Summer are Tough Fishing Conditions! Hello friends and fellow anglers. It has been almost a month since I last reported on the fishing conditions here on Toledo Bend. This time of year I don’t fish as often as I do in the spring and fall mainly because of the heat and exhaustion. Yes, I get burnt out! Like anything one endeavors to do, every now and then we need a break. Summer is a tough time to be outdoors doing any kind of activity when the temp is in the 90’s and heat indexes are soaring above the 100 degree mark. With that said here are some ways to catch a few fish at this time. For the most part fishing is really tough and the catch ratio has fallen off tremendously. Bass are schooling however mainly during the hottest part of the day. Look for them over deep grass beds, 12 to 20 ft. depts. around humps and drop offs close to feeder creeks and sloughs. Yellow magic, Pop R’s, Zara spooks, for example for the top water bite. Deep diving crank baits like DD 22’s,1/4 ounce spoons, Rinki dinks, for example for suspended fish. Carolina rigged centipedes and worms, Texas rigged worms, finesse worms Texas rigged or drop shot rigged for bottom fishing. Don’t expect to load the boat, however when conditions are right or you find a school of bass it can happen. Night fishing is good on the new moon faze which will be happening during the next couple of weeks. Spinner baits and Texas rigged worms work really well during this time. A word of caution if you night fish; launch close to where you fish due to thunder storms and the present lake level. The lake level at this time is just above 168 m. s. l. which means the lake is low and stumps are abundant. Keep that in mind while motoring around! The crappie bite has slowed down a well which is normal for this time of year. Even with brush piles the catch ratio has dropped off due to water temp. and the fish not needing to feed as often as we would like them to. The fish metabolism has really slowed their activity down just like it does in the cold months of the year. Jigs tipped with crappie nibblets and live shiners will both work to catch a few fish. That is all I have at this time except to say drink plenty of liquids and use sun screen if you are fishing this time of year. Heat exhaustion can be life threatening so be cautious and use common since while fishing or any other activity outdoors this time of year. Be safe and courteous to other fishermen while fishing and have fun! It’s not always how many fish you can catch, sometime it’s can you catch a fish! Keep what you can use and release the rest.
